Video in healthcare: a shoot that does not disrupt care
Filming in a healthcare facility, a laboratory or around a medical device imposes rules most shoots ignore: consent, confidentiality, hygiene, continuity of activity. Those rules are not an obstacle to the film. They determine its shape.
What can be filmed in a healthcare facility?
The answer depends on your facility and your internal procedures, and it is built with you beforehand. Never improvised on site.
What is always prepared before a shoot in a care setting:
- the agreement of management and the ward manager
- written consent from every identifiable person on screen
- the zones and moments where filming does not disturb the activity
- the hygiene rules that apply to the equipment and the crew
- what must appear in no image: screens, files, identities, schedules
I start from the principle that no image is acquired until the agreement is in writing. It is slower on the shoot and much faster afterwards: a film that cannot be shown because one consent is missing is a lost film.
How do you film without disrupting the activity?
A small crew, equipment that sets up and moves fast, and a schedule built around the ward's quiet moments rather than around the shoot's convenience.
The principle that guides everything: at any moment, filming stops if care requires it, without discussion and without anyone having to ask. It is said beforehand, to everyone, and it changes the welcome the teams give.
What films for a healthcare organisation?
The patient-pathway film. What happens, in what order, with whom. Reduces anxiety and calls to the front desk. The most useful film, and the one most rarely made.
The care-staff recruitment film. In a sector under permanent strain, the honest job film is the tool that works best.
The facility presentation film. For authorities, partners, families, applicants.
The device or procedure film. Presenting a piece of equipment, a technique, a protocol. Often completed with animation to show what happens inside the body or the machine.
The congress film. Recorded talks, expert interviews, a summary of the event.
And the rules on communication?
Some healthcare organisations are bound by strict rules on what they may say and show, especially as soon as a health product is involved. I do not stand in for your regulatory affairs team: I work with them.
In practice, the running order and the script go through your regulatory approval before the shoot, and the edited version goes through it again before release. Both steps are built into the schedule from the quote onwards, with time set aside. That is what avoids discovering at the end of the project that one sentence makes the film unusable.
