Putting clinical research on screen
stane organises clinical research in community medicine: more than 1,000 doctors in the network, studies run for healthcare manufacturers and hospitals. I started there as a salaried videographer, on a management contract, then stane kept me on as a supplier. The whole of the brand's audiovisual communication came through my camera. One way of writing, one way of lighting: you recognise a stane film without reading the logo. The first films were still working when I delivered the last ones.
The context
stane organises clinical research where it is rarely practised: in community medicine. Observational and interventional studies, data hosted in a certified health-data environment: technical work, unknown to the very people it addresses.
My remit: the whole of the audiovisual output, from the visual identity to the formats themselves, clips, brand journalism, mini-documentaries, shows, live broadcasts. First as an employee, then as a supplier when stane carried on after I left.
The constraint
3 audiences, 3 registers of image: the doctors to bring into the network, the manufacturers who commission the studies, the partner hospitals. And a framework that forgives nothing: scientific vocabulary to the word, regulation, the image rights of patients and staff.
The setup
- Videographer embedded, then supplier: editorial continuity thrown in
- Concept, shoot, edit, grade, distribution
- Sony FX9: a polished, clean image, the register healthcare expects
- Edit approved by the scientific teams before release
- Filming releases as a matter of course in care settings
The deliverables
- Visual identity for the brand's video content
- Promotional clips and institutional films
- Brand journalism and mini-documentaries
- Full shows, from the script to the broadcast
- Live streams and social media cutdowns
